Autumn 1 Curriculum Map - Green Class - Let's Create

Autumn 1 2021

Hello and welcome to Green Class at West site!  We are ready for another exciting year.   My name is Ella-Marie, but please feel free to call me Ella, and I am the teacher in Green Class.  Within the class we have a fantastic team including: Alice (TA3), Charlotte and Sobia (TA1s) who support teaching and learning with the children whilst making it fun and rewarding.  Nikki (HLTA) covers the class on alternate Mondays when I am out of class.   At present this year, we have eight boys in the class.

This half term our thematic unit this half term is the ‘Let’s Create’ with our focus being ‘Exploring Sculpture’.  We will be exploring different materials and creating a range of individual and group sculptures.

Our Values focus for the first half term is ‘Friendship’ and PSHE is ‘My Relationships’.  We will look for opportunities to recognise this value and what or how we create and nurture friendships and recognise relationships at home and at school.

We will also begin our RSE work focusing on being a boy / girl, bodies, touch (kind / inappropriate), friendships and hygiene.  Please note we will be using the correct terms for all body parts.

In the cookery lessons this term the children will be making a variety of cupcakes using a range of equipment, following instructions and developing independence skills.

In English this half term we will be reading ‘Aliens Love Underpants’.  The children will have the opportunity to explore well known characters, match words / pictures / symbols, complete sentences to support comprehension and sequence the story.

Amazon’s description of the book: "Aliens love underpants, in every shape and size,

But there are no underpants in space, so here's a big surprise...."  This zany, hilarious tale is delightfully brought to life by Ben Cort's vibrant illustrations. With a madcap, rhyming text by award-winning Claire Freedman, this is sure to enchant and amuse the whole family!  Perfect for joining in, this story is fantastically fresh and funny.

We will also be participating in regular phonics sessions three times a week and the children's reading skills will be supported through matching activities, flashcards, games and reading books as appropriate throughout the week.

The children will have further opportunities to develop their fine motor and handwriting skills through weekly activities such as Dough Disco, Write Dance and handwriting activities.

The Mathematics curriculum is taught through a rolling rota with a focus on Number, Capacity and Symmetry this half term.  These differentiated sessions will focus on elements appropriate for each of the children.

We have two computing sessions each week, typically one linked to English and the other linked to Maths.  Activities will encourage the children to use the mouse and keyboard to develop their skills, as well as supporting them in understanding concepts.

Throughout the term we hope to have regular walks to support the children in developing their road safety awareness and knowledge of the local area.  We are looking for children to become more aware of their surroundings and in keeping themselves safe

We have an enjoyable half term ahead and we are looking forward to making friends, becoming more independent, learning together and having fun!
