Welcome to Emerald Class!

Hello from the children and adults in Emerald class.

Summer 2

In Emerald class this half term the children are working with Tom, Aga, Achlan and Aiden on a musical/literacy project about China. We are reading The Magic Paintbrush by Julia Donaldson and creating layers of sound and voice, which we will be recording. Throughout the curriculum the children will be learning about Chinese numbers, food and clothes. They will also be learning about Pandas and finding out about their habitats. 2014 is also the year of the horse the children have produced a collaborative picture of a horse for our display.

Summer 1

This half term our topic is New Life and in Emerald class we are learning about sunflowers and bees. 

The children have planted sunflower seeds, and we are watching how they grow. They have learnt the life cycle of a sunflower.

We also have a butterfly net in the classroom and have seen the eggs hatching into caterpillars.

THE CHILDREN CANT WAIT TO SEE THE BUTTERFLIES EMERGE!

We have also looked at paintings by Van Gogh and the children have created their own. Below are some pictures of Van Gogh's Sunflowers and the children's paintings.

Giant African Land Snail

Julie brought in her Giant African Land Snail for the children to see. They were able to hold the snail and the watch how it moved. Below are some photos!

Spring 2

We have been reading the story Green Eggs and Ham.

Display

Our fantastic money boxes were so lovely we are displaying them in the foyer area in the display case for really special work. Inside it currently are money boxes designed and made by Damian, Luke and Junior. 

As you can see by the photos, they are pretty amazing.

Spring 1

This half term our topic is 'Cafes' and the children will be learning how to use money, write menus and take customer orders in our role play area. 

In Literacy we will be learning the sounds of the alphabet 

and practising how to write each letter through reading two stories by Dr.Seuss: Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in a Hat.

Numeracy/Topic

We have been learning about coins.

We have learnt how to order coins in ICT.

We have played in our Cafe, buying and selling `cakes` and five currant buns.

We have added cake prices together, using real coins. 

We have made `pizza` , choosing toppings and charging them at a penny a topping.

The children have really enjoyed using and playing with money.

They especially liked waiting on the tables in our pretend cafe, and selling the produce.

Literacy

We have been reading Green Eggs and Ham.  We have done lots of work with this book. We have used positional language  to find `Where is Sam?`

We have learnt how to make green by mixing yellow and blue together, for the green eggs.

We also learnt how to make scrambled eggs, writing the instructions and following them.

We have made sentences from cutting up word sheets, underwriting and making into sentences.

The class have loved this book and they pick it up and start reading independently.

Autumn 2

Our topic for this half term was 'Over The Rainbow' we read the story of The Wizard of Oz. The children have made a display of the characters for our classroom wall,

Then we wrote character descriptions.

In Numeracy 

we were finding out about patterns and sequencing by learning to

play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the Ocarina. We used different colours for each finger and followed the pattern to make the tune.

We were very proud of Emerald class playing the Ocarina at the Christmas concert.

Lynda brought her dog in to class as it looks just like the dog in the story 'Toto' The children loved it and have learnt the different parts of a dog.
